NEW FREE TRAINING OPPORTUNITY...

Financial Management Skills for Small Business

The NZAA (through the NZHITO) is delighted to present to all arborists a training initiative developed in conjunction with accountancy software company Mind Your Own Business NZ  (MYOB) with support from the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) and the Department of Labour (DOL).
The program will be presented and delivered by McGirr Training of Wellington. This is a great opportunity in delivering business skills by distance learning to small and medium businesses throughout New Zealand.

The arboriculture industry includes many small business companies where the infrastructure of the business is often dependent on the key working people. Often referred to as ‘mum and dad’ businesses with one partner working in the trade and the other partner managing the office administration. It requires a level of IT, communication skill, problem-solving and financial understanding that may be generally termed ‘financial literacy’. It is a commonly held view of many bankers and other professionals that small businesses can struggle, if they are not supported in this area.

Topics Covered

  • Information & Communications Technology (ICT) – using computers to improve their reporting and accounting, understanding office language, improving computer package skills such as MYOB, Word, or Excel
  • Health and Safety – virtually everyone has it as part of their induction, but it is important for this industry to be very sure of what the responsibilities are of both employer and employee alike
  • Reading documents for business understanding
  • Processing financial transactions
  • General literacy, writing, spelling, and communication skills for office administration
  • Understanding the basic principles of bookkeeping
  • Using a calculator to maximum benefit

There is no cost to the employers or employees - the delivery material is provided through MYOB NZ and McGirr Training.

McGirr Training will provide the on-line and phone tutorial support, as well as the assessments for any of the unit standards that trainees may want to earn (NZQA assessments are not compulsory). The opportunity to achieve an MYOB NZ certificate of achievement is also available to every trainee.

Programme Details

  • The programme is for any small business of fewer than 20 employees
  • The programme is approximately 40 hours of on-line learning
  • The cost of the programme to the first 80 people is Free of Charge (FOC)
  • You are not required to complete a NZHITO training agreement, however credits earned can contribute to credits towards the National Certificate in Horticulture Level 4
  • It is not a requirement to have the software program MYOB, however it is useful to have it
  • MYOB is available at a special rate to anyone on the programme, if required

ISA Certified Arborist Examinations

The date for the next NZ 2008 International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist exams is:- Saturday 22 November, 2008.

The NZAA will hold the next ISA Certified Municipal Arborist exam during the conference at Hamilton in November - the exam is a 200 question, multiple-choice exam.

Furthermore, the NZAA intends offering the ISA Certified Tree Worker exam for the first time in New Zealand at the conference too - the exam is a mixture of practical and theory assessment and requires an arborist to have been working in the industry for a minimum of 18 months. It is possible to apply for a waiver for the practical component, if you have competed in the climbing competition.

Applications for these exams must be received before 24 October, 2008.

There will be limited places due to time constraints, so if you wish to apply to sit either of these exams, use the application form below. If you require more information, contact David Glenn by cell phone 029 200-9242 or email via
