Ronald (Ron) Flook died suddenly in Nelson 9/1/06.

Ronald Flook a leading New Zealand Landscape Architect  played a significant role in the formation and direction of the New Zealand Arboricultural Association and he will be greatly missed not only by those who knew him but also by those that new of him.

Through out his life, Ronald demonstrated a deep empathy with trees. He became the member of the Notable Tree Committee in 1981, he authored several books on tree including the RNZIH Tree Evaluation Method for New Zealand (1988), An Introduction to the Notable Trees of New Zealand (1994) and A Standard Tree Evaluation Method - STEM (1996).

In 1994 New Zealand Arboricultural Association President Frank Buddingh established an annual award in Ronald’s name – The Ronald Flook Award. Frank chose (on behalf of the NZAA) to name this award after Ronald in recognition of the high standard of aesthetics and the effect in which he used trees in his landscape designs. The award is given to those who have demonstrated good practices in Arboriculture, whether functional or aesthetic in any stage of development including tree raising, tree health and management and amenity tree protection.

Ronald supported this award from its inception, and personally contributed to it, ensuring the award was made available for the each of the recipients.

If anyone was worthy of receiving such an award then it was Ronald himself.

The NZAA wishes to acknowledge Ronald’s contribution and to the entire New Zealand tree care community. He will be sadly missed and in keeping with his families wishes the NZAA will undertake a commemorative tree planting in his honour.

Sincerely
David Glenn
President of the New Zealand Arboricultural Association

ANNOUNCING THE UPCOMING

New Zealand Arboricultural Association 18th Annual Conference

‘Trees & Development.  To tree or not to tree’

10th  – 12th November 2005
The Spencer on Byron Hotel, Takapuna, North Shore City

The New Zealand Arboricultural Association (NZAA) proudly announces the upcoming 18th annual conference to be held at The Spencer On Byron Hotel in Takapuna, North Shore City on the 10th – 12th November 2005.

This year the conference is focusing on the often complex issue of ‘Trees & Development’.  Given the current climate relating to land development, design restrictions and tree regulations, the presence of trees on sites is causing a variety of professions to address the issue of trees and development like never before.

A diverse range of speakers are available to offer those in the field of Arboriculture, Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Landscape Design, Landscape Contractors and Suppliers, Urban and Resource Management Planners and Engineering Consultants an opportunity to come together to hear thought provoking ideas and to discuss your issues relating to how trees affect your profession.

International and nationally recognised speakers will discuss issues about trees that will have relevance to your profession and your business.  In addition to the seminars and networking, there is the NZAA/STIHL National Tree Climbing Championship and Conference dinner with entertainment to experience.

Be sure to book your place at the conference now to take advantage of the early bird registration fee and to avoid missing out altogether.  The conference venue has a limited number of seats and, in the interests of hosting a successful conference, we have restricted the total number of delegates so be sure to get your registration in quickly.

For further information, contact the Conference Organiser Julie Baxendine (E: P: 03 546 6338   F: 03 545 9227).  Attached is information on the programme and a registration form.  Submit your registration form or you can log on to www.nzarbor.org.nz to find out more conference information.

Special General Meeting (28 Aug 05)

Dear Members,

A Special Meeting of members was held on 22 August 2005 at Wellington Airport to discuss "Actual or perceived conflict of interest of some NZAA Executive Officers and Committee Members" in relation to Hort. Train NZ Limited. Members had the opportunity of asking the Executive and the NZAA lawyer any questions they wished to. A helpful discussion then followed, and at the end of the meeting members were given the opportunity of making any comment they wished to. Quite a few of the members spoke:

•  There was a call for more communication between the Executive and the membership

•  Several people made the point that any perceived lack of transparency about the way the Executive operated could breed mistrust within the organisation

•  Members wanted to see clearer guidelines to avoid any confusion in the future

It was the role of the Executive to decide what resulting action to take. The Executive (comprising 11 members) undertook to report back to the membership. The Executive met following the special meeting. The following resolutions were then passed unanimously:

Motion:

That having looked at the legal options available and taken advice on the matter, and having considered the issues raised at the Special General Meeting, the NZAA Executive has decided not to take any action against Hort Training New Zealand Limited or those associated with that Company at this stage.

David Glenn/Craig Webb

Passed Unanimously

Motion:

That having considered the need for transparency within the NZAA, it is resolved that the President of the NZAA will, in his report in each magazine issue, summarise for the membership those matters which have been discussed and dealt with at Executive meetings, and that before the report goes out to the membership, other members of the Executive and the Secretary will normally have an opportunity to review the President's summary.

Phil Sale/Damian Herrick

Passed Unanimously.

Motion:

It is resolved that the NZAA Executive will adopt a formal Conflict of Interest and Use of Confidential Information policy, and that the policy should address in a practical way the issues that have come to light as a result of the Special General Meeting.   A draft policy is to be circulated to the Executive prior to the next meeting with a view to adopting a final policy at the next meeting.

Bruce MacDonald/Brian Rickey

Passed Unanimously.

Motion:

That the Executive shall report to the Membership on the outcome of the Special General Meeting and on the steps taken as a result of that meeting.

Trevor Gardiner/Mark Roberts

Passed Unanimously.

Re-vamped members section.

The members section of this web site has been opened to the public. Members will retain full services, while the public now has greater access to the full services of the NZAA.

The 2004 Tree Camp

The 2004 tree Camp and general Arborist get together is to be held over the last weekend in November 2004.

The tree Camp idea is something that works well overseas (its all the social bits of a conference without the talks and endless sitting). They are a relaxed and informal way of networking, connecting and getting together with fellow likeminded people.

It is to be held in the central North. For more information and expressions of interest please contact, Tim Sharp 027 294 1818.

SGM

A Special Meeting of the NZAA will be held on the 16th of July 2004 at the YMCA 12 Hereford St, Christchurch (Ground Floor Lounge), from 10:00 am till 12:00pm.

The express purpose of this meeting is to move "that the proposed constitution be adopted as circulated".

A copy of the proposed constitution has been included with issue 22 of Tree Matters.
